Our philosophy

What Happens to the Books?

Every book that arrives gets looked at. Then it follows one of five paths.

i.

Collected

Interesting books may become part of Aftershelf's working or reference library — the shelves we consult, lend from, and learn from.

ii.

Resold

Books with a viable market are sold to readers. Sales support Aftershelf and fund the rescue of more collections.

iii.

Bundled

Some books are grouped into subject collections or starter libraries — philosophy, poetry, classics, American history, foreign-language learning, theology, art history.

iv.

Donated

Useful books without meaningful resale value may go to schools, libraries, Little Free Libraries, nonprofits, or community groups when practical.

v.

Recycled

Books that are severely damaged, outdated, moldy, or otherwise unusable may ultimately need to be recycled or discarded.

Taking a collection means taking responsibility for sorting it — not promising that every book will remain permanently preserved.

We'd rather be honest about that than make promises no one could keep. What we can promise is care, attention, and good judgement.

Books are meant to have more than one life.
